Laurel Highlands Hiking Trip
May 31 to June 2, 2024


Periodically Troop 480 offers a backpacking opportunity along a portion of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. This experience is for the most hearty of Scouts and Scouters, as it involves carrying your entire camp from start to finish. Once you embark on the trail, there's no turning back. But the satisfaction of seeing it through to the end is well worth the journey. Happy trails!

Hiking the seventy mile ribbon of trail between the Youghiogheny and Conemaugh Rivers can be a rich experience, brimming with natural beauty, healthful exercise, good companionship and spiritual calm.


Trail Location: From PA Rt-653 north to PA Rt-31. Trail distance about 12.4 miles.
Date: May 31 to June 2, 2024
Departure/Arrival: Meet at 5:30 p.m. to depart St. Paul’s on Friday evening by 6:00 p.m. Return to be mid to late morning on Sunday. Scouts to call home for rides, when they return to the church.
  Adults participating in this activity will use their own vehicles to transport group to the Rt. 653 trailhead. Other adults will be needed to move those vehicles from Rt. 653 trailhead to the Rt. 31 trailhead parking lot on Friday evening, so they are available when the hikers reach that destination on Sunday.
Driving Time: Approximately 1 hour each direction. Time required to shuttle vehicles on Friday evening approximately 90 minutes in addition to return drive to Greensburg.

Trail Camping: The group will camp at the Rt-653 shelter area Friday night and the Grindle Ridge shelter area on Saturday. Both of these areas have defined campsites.
Physical Exertion: This is not a hike for beginners or for individuals not in moderately good physical shape. Participants will need to train (by taking walks) and will need to be capable of hiking 5 miles with a 20-25 pound pack in about 2.5 hours. Mr. Hanawalt will make the final approval of readiness for all registered hikers.
Meals: Meals will consist of simple trail food, which will require rehydration and minimal cooking. The group will carry small camp stoves and appropriate cooking utensils to prepare the meals.
What to Bring: You will need some kind of a pack to carry your gear. You should be able to carry 25-30 pounds. You may need share a tent with a buddy. Hiking boots (well broken in) are a must. Sleeping bag, foam mat or pad and small flashlight. Clothing appropriate for the weather. Prepare for rain. Don’t forget your eating utensils water bottle and cup.  We will not supply these for you and the nearest supplies may be miles away. Be prepared.
Medical Form: Up-to-date parts A & B of the BSA Medical form are required for this activity.

Activity Fee: $55.00 - This includes camp & program fees along with 4 meals and 2 snacks.
Registration: This is a required activity for 2024 Northern Tier Participants. Other Troop participants will be considered on a first come first serve basis. Register early on our online system to save your space, but no later than Wednesday, May 15.
